Even though Mary Ann and I had help from our Chinese staff throughout our trip, a question might be if we would be comfortable on our our own. Is there enough English spoken? Does it matter?
The further out from Shanghai or Hong Kong you go, the more problematic it gets. Hotels usually have one person that can work through English. I would not be afraid to walk on my own in Shanghai or Hong Kong and even if I came across a local who could not speak the language, it isn’t too intimidating as they are used to people from all over the world visiting. Hong Kong especially. If you need to eat, point at what you want and you can usually….not always…get what you want. Signage with English is usually sensible but not always.
